Between The Line Questions
1. Why do you think Curley's wife married Curley?
I believe Curley's wife married Curley because it wasn't much else to choose from. Not to mention that he was very convient for her. I think she was attracted to him the most out of all the guys because he held "authority". None the less she had nothing else to do but become someone's wife.
2. Why do you think George says Lennie is his cousin?
I believe George say Lennie is his cousin because that was the best way to describe what Lennie was to him without people being too nosey. They got into a lot of trouble in the previous town they ventured into (Weed). I don't think that he wanted anyone to find out about that. People wouldn't press him too much about why Lennie followed him if he pretended he was his cousin. Family is supposed to take care of family no matter what.
3. Do you think it's ironic that Candy has an old handicap dog?
Yes, I do believe it is ironic that Candy has an old handicap dog. For one Candy himself is disabled, and I believe that his dog is a representation of him. Nobody really wants the dog around. That is almost the same way some feel about Candy. I think the author did this purposely.
4. Why do you believe the author continues to describe women as trouble throughout the book?
I saw a accurance of women being the source of trouble throughout the book repeadtly. It even started off with them being on the run because of something that happened with a women in the town "Weed". I believe Steinbeck does this because he wants to express how women were viewed in the society the book was based on. He seems to somewhat lead people onto the thought that others believed women had no place in the "man's world".
5.Why do you believe Curley has a problem with Lennie?
I believe Curley has a problem with Lennie because he is insecure with himself. He goes around wearing high-heels for the pure fact the he is too short! I think he is intimidated with people that look stronger and bigger then him. He wants to be the one with authority around the barn. I think he'll do anything to keep that position.
6.Do you think it's ironic that both Lennie and the old dog were both killed with Carlson's gun?
Yes I do belive it's ironic that both Lennie and the old dog were both killed with Carlson's gun. The dog was shot because he was being put out of his misery. I think that the same goes for Lennie. If he wasn't killed by George he would've been put through a very miserable slow death. Not to mention that his life wasn't all peaches and cream.

Essay #1
What do you believe Candy's old dog symbolizes in today's society?
Excitment would be one emotion that goes through a person's mind when they recieve a new puppy. How they can't wait to see the puppy grow up and teach them new tricks. Being tired of the dog would be one emotion that goes through a person's mind their then new puppy is now replaced with an decrpit older model. What possibly could one do with an old dog, but watch it lay around all day? That's exactly what people thought of Candy's old dog in the book "Of Mice and Men".
Candy's dog was once useful on the ranch. Now very old, no one wants him their but Candy. Even then, Candy agrees for the dog to be killed. A character by the name of Carlson promises to kill the dog ("painlessly"). This shows us that in today's society; the strong will dispose of the weak.
The weak in our society not only being old dog's but the symbolization the old dog represents (elderly people). Elderly people are at an age that some people don't find them useful. Ofcourse they were useful before when they had youth running through their bones. Yes, they were useful to society when they held jobs that helped our country. Why is it that when they become older people tend to pay less attention to them.
Not only that, older people become a target to many ugly acts. The nice thing to think would be that older people are wiser and should be respected. Not! People take advantage of the elderly. For Example, some rob older people because they aren't as aware of their surrondings and physically they are no competition. Others just send their older relatives off to a nursing home? How sweet is that? Not sweet at all I'd say.
In Conclusion, I believe Candy's old dog represents the elderly people in today's society. It's sad to know that some people think of the elderly to be worthless. I know for sure that when I become older I wouldn't want the sense of worthlessness to be stamped onto my forehead. Maybe we can fix this problem in society as soon as possible. The older, the wiser; one once said.
Essay Question# 2
How does Curley's wife compare to the women today?
Way Back, back in to time; no I believe I should say about 60+ years ago most woman were looked upon as house-wifes. If you got your degree from college you were thought of as different. If you didn't have kids galore you were thought of as different. In the story "Of Mice and Men" the only female character in the book was named "Curley's Wife". Nice name for a lady. Throughout my essay I am going to compare Curley's wife to the women of today.
From the name "Curley's Wife", you should already see that she doesn't mean much. To not even have a real name, but to be referred to as a man's property; very sad. Although I do believe that Curley's wife didn't want the life that was thrown at her. I think that she wanted to be one of the different women in her society, but she decided that her dream life of being independent fairly didn't exist.
In today's society women all over are very different. You don't see as many house wife's. You actually see women with careers and at times making a larger salery then the "man of the house". For instance in 2008 our country had our very first women (Hillary Clinton) run for president. Although she didn't win, you can see how far the "idea of a women" has come.
Although women today still face similar troubles that Curley's wife faced. A women can get the same job as a man do a better job as that man; but make less tbhen him. Some women are still being looked at as "trophy wifes" nothin more then someone to place onto your arm to make you the man better. Sexism is a problem that still is in our country today.
In Conclusion, women in today's society have progressed from just being someone's wife. Yes, women can hold high careers and even make a song such as "Single Ladies" that impowers the fact that you can do good all by yourself. I believe we as women have come a long way. There's no stopping us, so I will be ready for the day that men and women are given the same salary, and when the first women is elected president. Are you?

Growing Pains.

When I first walked into the school I overheard people saying
“Oh my god is that a school?”
“It looks so small.”
“Do you not see the sign that says “Constitution High School?” “
Pause; All I thought about was the schools on the movies, with the long hallways and the many classrooms, not to mention the football fields or the gym. The big beautiful gym! Now play look around at our school. You may question yourself …
Do we have enough space left? How many freshmen were accepted? Are the classrooms shrinking? Now fast-forward, where are the upcoming classes going to spend their year?
In the hallway? Oh I hope not.
The school population is growing, but is the school “shrinking?” Many people here at school hold strong opinions on this topic?
Such as present concerns, future concerns, and what could be changed to help decrease this problem. No matter what we all have to remember this school is still going to grow.

I’ve heard many people conversing about the present concerns of the size of our school.“Did you see the size of the 11th graders class?” Sophmore Nataly Ortiz stated.
As more and more students begin to attend Constitution High-School the class size beings to rise.
Some people here at school think that there could possibly be changes to help decrease this problem. Sophmore Christelle Chery thinks that we could use uneccesary rooms for different things. She states “The nurse has three different rooms, why?” That question will most likely remain un-answered. Sophmore Khalia Thompson thinks that we could use the dual enrollment program. But is everybody qualified?
Students were a little upset at the fact that we don’t have any room to fit more classes. Sophmore Christelle Chery states that she wishes we could have music class. On the other hand people are pulling their hair out at the fact that we are going to have even more freshmen accepted for the class of 2013. “Where are we going to fit them?” Sophmore Ciara Bishop stated. If only we could rewind and look for a bigger building.

Editing. ... please ignore
My parents always told me that I wasn't just your average child. I didn’t always like to play around with the kids around the way. More or less I liked to be around older people. Don’t get me wrong I played dodge ball; freeze tag, hide and go-seek, t-v tag, all the rest of the tags. When it comes down to the choice between hanging with my older cousins or playing Barbie dolls; I’d rather hang with my older cousins. My cousins soon started to forget my age. “Alexis you’re 13 right”? Here I am replying, “No I’m only 11”. It was pretty funny because here you have your own cousins forgetting how old you are. Around the holidays I always hung around for the adult conversations while the other kids would go play different games. Now here I am in English and the teacher is asking are you in your summer or spring? Spring meaning no responsibilities maturity level at an all time low, basically a 10-year-old mind state. Seeing as though when I was ten I didn’t have a ten-year-old mind state I definitely knew I was in my summer. For the main three reasons maturity, responsibility, and my goal orientated mind.
As the oldest out of three I had to become mature and try to lead a good example for my younger brother and sister. I do things like maintain my grades in school and respect others because I want them to do the same. My sister whom I’ve noticed more and more everyday is basically trying to be just like me! It was pretty annoying at first, she wanted the same sneakers, the same clothes, the same shoes, the same everything! She follows me around and tries to talk like me at times, let’s just say the whole nine yards. I try to watch what I do because I know for a fact that she looks up to me. In the story “Marigolds” Lizabeth knows that she will need to become mature to set a good example for her younger brother. Her brother looks up to her seeing her destroy the flowers in Miss Lotti’s yard probably said something to him. After that she realizes she had to grow up for the betterment of both of their lives.
Responsibility has become something I’ve somewhat mastered. Once I was given my house keys responsibility flashed before my eyes. Then the money came in like big bags of green confetti. I know how to handle and save up money. I might really want that expensive bag, but if I’m saving up money their will always be a next time for that bag. Not to mention chores that I’m responsible for around the house. Most of the time I find myself doing my siblings chores. If I see something that needs to be done I don’t just step over it; I complete that task.
My main goals in life will be met. No more worries about ice cream stains on my shirt, I’m worried about the big picture. Things like how can I get into New York University, or how I’m going to fill in that application for the job that I want at Pac-Sun. How many pages I have left in the Driver’s Ed book, and let’s not get started on the Standardized Tests at school. I’m determined to be in school for the many years that’s needed to become a lawyer. In my mind no one will stop me from being a successful person. There’s no giving up, and I know for sure that that’s not a spring state mindset.
In Conclusion it’s a time in life where you have to stop letting yourself grow spring leaves. Not to say that you have to grow up or you’ll forever be a danger to society, but it’s a time when you have to mature. My time wasn’t forced on me like other people; it just came to me like two magnets. Life is about choices; the choices you make will help you in the long run or snap you like a twig. For the mean time my mind-state has helped me make the right ones. Sooner or later I will transition to autumn and winter, but I'm happy with my summer life. What season are you in?

"High On The Hog"
Poetry? What can I possibly say about “poetry”? Is it the tone that attracts you in? Or maybe it’s just something you have to do. Whatever it is for you; poetry is food for the soul. The poem “High On The Hog” by Julia Fields is no exception. The main focus of this poem is reality. She covers three aspects of that through out her literature. I know you can’t wait; so let’s begin!
Julia Fields describes how she wants more to life by using the word “enough” repeatedly through out the poem. She’s stating how she has been through the struggle and now she deserves to be “high on the hog”. A painted visual of slavery begins when she states “…had strong black beaten backs long enough, …from dragging the cotton sack on bended knee.” This gives the readers a picture of she wants to rise above.
The reality of “high class vs. low class” is described in the poem. Numerous visual pictures are painted into the readers mind when she mentions food. Many people just like her are tired of “black-eyed peas and the grits, the high blood pressure chops and gravy sops”. The wanting of “caviar shrimp soufflĂ© and sherry champagne”, “take her share of soul food, I do not wish to taste of pig”. Food is an extremely good way to connect to readers.
Emotional aspects of reality are also represented in this poem. Especially when she brings racial background into everyone’s minds. Fields states “been lynched enough, slaved enough, dried enough, died enough”. Violence triggers multiple emotions; it resurfaces memories of hurt and pain. “I’ve been hired last enough, I’ve sugar watered my thirst enough”. People have emotional stories of their own of not being hired for the job that they really needed.
In Conclusion I believe that Julia Fields isn’t just speaking for herself when she says that she wants to be “high on the hog”. Which then she speaks for many individuals and their struggle. Many people find the voice that they’ve kept silent in this poem. References of reality are represented in this poem; beginning with how she wants more to life, high class vs. low class, and emotions. Now could you create a poem like this, you wish you were “high on the hog”, don’t you?
